Dear Parents,
The following is a brief description of
the skills, concepts, and themes that will be studied during the September 2019 – June 2020 school year. Activities in
this program are designed to allow each child to develop and progress at their
individual pace, and to provide a challenge for those students demonstrating a
readiness.
Language
Arts
Language Arts includes the four
communication skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Throughout the year the children will be
exposed to a wide variety of reading materials including fiction and non-fiction,
class made booklets, poems, charts, and songs.
Reading Activities
• independent silent reading
• buddy reading (sharing stories with
friends)
• daily home reading (suggested 15
minutes/night)
• daily stories or chapter books (read
aloud by the teacher)
• reading classroom poems and posters
• learning thematic vocabulary
(Science, Social Studies, Math, Music)
• choral and dramatic readings
• playing teacher led reading games
Writing Activities
• practicing correct formation of lower and upper case letters
• learning correct use of punctuation
and capital letters
• learning correct sentence structure
• journal writing on topics of personal
choice or assigned topics
• expressing ideas using
sentence patterns (e.g. I think _____.)
• writing simple thematic poems (rhyming
and non-rhyming)
• writing short stories with a
beginning, middle, and end
• using brainstorming techniques
related to writing and theme topics
Spelling/Phonics
• reviewing
letter sound–symbol correspondence (said and heard)

consonant and vowel sounds (short and long)

beginning, middle, and end blend sounds (st, gr, tr, lk, nk,)

practicing alphabetical order

Speaking/Listening
