DIVISION 6          GRADE 1&2          MRS. LESLIE

Dear Parents, 
The following is a brief description of the skills, concepts, and themes that will be studied during the September 2019 – June 2020 school year.  Activities in this program are designed to allow each child to develop and progress at their individual pace, and to provide a challenge for those students demonstrating a readiness.


Language Arts
Language Arts includes the four communication skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  Throughout the year the children will be exposed to a wide variety of reading materials including fiction and non-fiction, class made booklets, poems, charts, and songs.

Reading Activities
• independent silent reading
• buddy reading (sharing stories with friends)
• daily home reading (suggested 15 minutes/night)
• daily stories or chapter books (read aloud by the teacher)
• reading classroom poems and posters
• learning thematic vocabulary (Science, Social Studies, Math, Music)
• choral and dramatic readings
• playing teacher led reading games

Writing Activities
• practicing correct formation of lower and upper case letters
• learning correct use of punctuation and capital letters
• learning correct sentence structure
• journal writing on topics of personal choice or assigned topics
• expressing ideas using sentence patterns (e.g.  I think _____.)
• writing simple thematic poems (rhyming and non-rhyming)
• writing short stories with a beginning, middle, and end
• using brainstorming techniques related to writing and theme topics

Spelling/Phonics
• reviewing letter sound–symbol correspondence (said and heard)
• reviewing consonant and vowel sounds (short and long)
• reviewing beginning, middle, and end blend sounds (st, gr, tr, lk, nk,)
• reviewing and practicing alphabetical order
• weekly spelling lessons using word families and thematic vocabulary

Speaking/Listening
• learning to listen attentively in a group
• learning questioning and commenting skills
• following directions and simple instructions
• speaking in a polite and clear manner
• sharing ideas and information
• relating personal experiences

Mathematics
• practicing and using correct number formation
• creating patterns and sequences
• using number lines and hundreds charts
• counting by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s (odd and even)
• estimating, identifying, and creating a set with more/less/equal
• creating/answering survey questions and graphing data
• identifying place value using ones, tens, and hundreds
• completing addition/subtraction (with/without regrouping)
• solving simple word problems
• measuring objects using non-standard and standard units (cm, g, l)
• telling time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour
• counting and comparing units of money (nickels, dimes, quarters)
• comparing whole numbers and fractions of whole numbers
• identifying and describing 2D and 3D geometric shapes

Social Studies
“My Identity and Local Community”, “BC Communities, Aboriginal Communities, and Global Communities”, “Communities and Environmental Relationships”, and “Mapping Skills/Canada”
• sharing information about ourselves (interests, family, changes)
• reviewing community workers and their roles
• examining changes in communities over time
• comparing characteristics of BC, Aboriginal, & Global Communities   
• describing Canadian physical environments
• examining various communities and environmental relationships
• identifying cultural characteristics of Canadian society
• interpreting simple maps using legends, symbols, and directions
• creating simple maps to represent familiar locations

Science
“Needs of Living Things (Marine Mammals)”, “The Sky Above Us”, “Light and Sound”, & “Force and Motion”
• learning about and using scientific processes, skills, and vocabulary
• using our senses to predict and interpret experiment results
• classifying living things by appearance, behaviour, and life cycle
• examining behavioural adaptations of animals in their environment
• identifying local patterns of events and objects (in the sky, on Earth)
• learning about the Sun and Moon through Aboriginal culture
• classifying properties of light/sound based on source and interaction
• describing how force influences the motion of an object
• identifying types of force and ways objects move differently

Physical Education
“Locomotion”, “Soccer", "Floor Hockey”, "Dance", “Basketball”, “Track & Field”, “Minor Games”, and “Equipment Stations”
• moving in the gymnasium using various directions and methods
• developing throwing, catching, and bouncing skills
• participating in equipment stations and simple games
• using space and equipment safely and appropriately
• demonstrating good sportsmanship

Fine Arts
• completing thematic and seasonal crafts (Fall, Winter, Spring, Holidays)
• studying styles and techniques of famous artists (Picasso, Harrison)
• singing songs related to seasonal holidays and themes
• making instruments using everyday materials
• using the Recorder (vertical flute) to play notes and simple songs
• participating in classroom drama games and activities
• creating various types of puppets for dramatic play

Personal Planning
• developing good work habits and becoming responsible citizens
• identifying support systems in the school and community
• learning about different careers and categorizing jobs/responsibilities
• learning to be healthy (hygiene, nutrition, injury, personal safety)
• understanding and using Dixon Dragon Pride vocabulary and behaviour

Division 6’s Weekly Classroom Schedule:
Gym – Wednesdays and Thursdays
Library – Mondays
